Given the active role of the Mojahedin- E- Kalgh Organization of Iran (PMOI) during the Islamic Revolution, this article analyzes the Islamic socialist discourse of the organization during the 1979 Iranian Revolution using the discourse theory of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe. Adopting a discourse analysis approach, the article examines how key concepts and signifiers—such as nodal points, fixation, moments, elements, articulation, floating signifiers, empty signifiers, master signifiers, subject positions, and identity—are represented and structured within the socialist discourse of the PMOI during the Revolution.
Data collection for this study is based on documentary sources, primarily relying on first-hand texts and writings of the organization The sampling method is purposive, and data analysis is qualitative, grounded in the theoretical categories of Laclau and Mouffe’s discourse theory.
According to the findings, the MKHOI's discourse assigns meaning to four key dimensions of society—economy, politics, culture, and social relations—primarily through a Marxist framework. The organization employs Islam as a moral and legitimizing foundation. The economy is conceptualized as the base, political systems as the superstructure and social contradictions as the driving force of historical change—drawing on Marxist theory but infused with religious legitimacy. This discourse posits a compatibility between Islamic and Marxist identities, arguing that a true Muslim is inherently aligned with revolutionary socialist objectives. It challenges the dichotomies between religion and leftist ideology, attempting to redefine both within the sociopolitical realities of Iran. The central nodal point of this discourse is Marxism, and the master signifier is the "Muslim Marxist." The discourse explicitly rejects the monarchical discourse, framing it as reactionary and an instrument of imperialism and capitalism, while promoting socialism as a political myth and ideal form of governance that is also endorsed by Islam.
Thus, the elements of this discourse reflect a synthesis of socialism and Islam, forming an interdiscursive and intertextual framework. This discourse represents a paradigmatic case of ideological hybridity in revolutionary Iran, striving to reconcile elements from competing discourses—particularly Marxist revolutionary theory and Islamic theology.
