 Target: Political Islam in Syria first appeared with the formation of the Muslim Brotherhood in the Sunni community of this country With the Islamic Awakening in the Arab world and the escalation of the internal context of the Syrian crisis, extremist Islamist groups were formed in the country.
These groups, with violent behaviors such as harassment and terrorist attacks, and the logistical and military assistance of regional and international actors, gained unprecedented power and expansion, and pushed the Syrian political system to the brink of collapse. The main purpose of this article is to examine the impact of extremist Islamist groups on the political instability in Syria under Bashar al-Assad.
Method: The research method used in this research is descriptive-analytical. The data collection method is based on the documentary method and the theoretical framework of political instability has been used to analyze the impact of extremist Islamist groups on political instability.
Findings: The findings of the study indicate that the set of actions and challenges of extremist Islamist groups have led to a change in the "government" of Syria; But they have not succeeded in changing the "regime" and the "society".
Conclusion: Considering the characteristics of the Syrian political system and the beginning of the Islamic Awakening in the Arab countries, extremist Islamist groups took advantage of this opportunity and created, continued and increased anti-government protests, riots, assassinations and guerrilla wars in Syria.
