This study presents a comparative analysis of the concept of freedom from the perspectives of Shahid Morteza Motahhari and John Stuart Mill. The findings reveal that despite fundamental differences in their intellectual foundations, these two thinkers arrive at similar conclusions in certain aspects. Mill, with his liberal approach, considers freedom an inherent right of the individual, limiting it only by the principle of not harming others. In contrast, Motahhari, with his Islamic approach, defines freedom within the framework of religious and ethical responsibilities.
Mill emphasizes individual autonomy and secular rationality in his works, whereas Motahhari views freedom as a means for spiritual growth. Politically, Mill advocates for liberal democracy, while Motahhari presents the concept of religious democracy. In the social sphere, both thinkers, albeit with different foundations, pay special attention to women's rights. A significant commonality between them is their critique of dogmatism and intellectual authoritarianism. Additionally, both warn against the consequences of extreme materialism. Mill proposes strengthening critical rationality as a solution, while Motahhari seeks the remedy in a return to religious values. This study demonstrates that a comprehensive understanding of freedom in the contemporary world requires attention to both intellectual traditions. A comparative examination of these perspectives can foster constructive dialogue between different cultures and civilizations, offering more balanced solutions to the complex challenges of modern societies.
